29th Annual Tofte Trek

Approximately 250 runners showed up for the 29th Annual 2008 Tofte Trek 10k Wilderness Run and kids races. A beautiful day was in order and the light breezes helped runners cool off while climbing in elevation to the high point along the trail. The legendary mud on the trail didn’t disappoint runners as they came back to the finish line with dirty running shoes and mud-sprayed legs.

Seven-time Tofte Trek winner Greg Hexum from Duluth repeated another win with a time of 36:41. Hot on Hexum’s heels was 18 year old Jordan Carlson from Inver Grove Heights, MN. Carlson recently placed third nationally in the one mile race at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, NC. Carlson’s time for the one mile race in Greensboro was 4:07. In the women’s 10k Tofte Trek, Michelle Volz from Lakeville, MN eked out a win ahead of Suzi Smith of Duluth. Volz’s time of 47:14 was 33 seconds ahead of Smith’s.

Competitive cross country skiers dominated the standings with many coming from Duluth, MN. Andre Watt, Bruce Bauer, Anders Osthus, Nikolai Anikin, Jason Wall, Erik Rupert, Sara Hollingsworth and Anne Flueckiger made their presence known in the top standings.

Many local Cook County runners showed their smiling faces at the 2008 Tofte Trek. Jan Horak, original organizer of the race for 25 years, announced the kid’s races and the award ceremony.
